Shadowhunters – Season 3, Episodes 11-13 – Review

The final (half) season of the tv series has finally arrived and it’s very controversial as usual. For a fan of Clare’s books like me and many others, seeing this tv series is like getting punched in the stomach.
Let’s analyse these first three episodes.

BEWARE, this review might contain spoilers that are inside the books or are an anticipation of the future episodes.

The first episode shows all the characters sad and in tears for Clary’s death. After defeating Lilith the place where they were fighting disappears along with them and this leads them to believe Clary to be dead.
I think I need to explain something to you, my dear reader: I hate Clary in the tv series, because she is annoying AF. And I was so happy when she disappeared for a while (even if I’m angry, because, according to the books, it was Jace who should have gone), because I really couldn’t stand her.
We also see poor little Simon torn because he thinks that the Mark of Cain killed both Lilith and Clary and he can’t live with this thought. What I really despised about this storyline is that Simon doesn’t have the chance to redeem himself and for once to be the hero of the story. He’s still bound to his stupid role of loser and nothing, not even killing one of the greatest demons ever, could change this situation. And it’s needless to say that this doesn’t happen in the books. Now we have to see him sorry and crying all the time because he can’t bear what he has (involuntary) done.
Not to mention that in the next episode they find a way to remove his mark thanks to none other than Cain in flesh and bone. We get to know that Cain is a daylighter and he has the mark on his forehead; for this reason, he lives in the sewers of New York because he is too afraid to endanger people. When I saw it I was shouting WTF everywhere. But then it gets worse, because Cain explains to Simon that to remove the mark he needs to bring the stone with which he killed his brother Abel to the Seelie Court, so that they would know what to do. In which universe has the Seelie Court a stick that can give people marks and is also able to remove them? I’m still asking myself what the producers read in these books and even IF they read something. I guess the answer is no.

What about Magnus and Alec? Dear God, help me. Magnus is powerless, thanks to the “”help”” of his father. And now he’s trying to adapt to his new Mundane’s life. Alec is very supportive and helps him in any sort of way, even training him in the Institute. But do we really need him powerless and useless like this right now? Oh, right, the answer is yes, because in the first episode he is also babysitting Madzie, the unknown baby warlock that has a pointless story in these wonderful seasons. I really can’t understand this plot. Well, no, I can’t understand many many things of the entire series.

Let’s go to Paris, where Clary and Jonathan move to in the second episode. Here our beloved Jonathan is looking for the Morgenstern sword: the Morning Star. At first, I thought he was looking for the Infernal Cup, like in the books, so he can create his own army, but nope, that’s not the case. I am really afraid of why he is trying to find this sword, because in the books it was given to Clary when she got to Idris. What I think (but I hope it won’t be like this) is that this sword is the one that has inside the Heavenly Fire, like the one in the books (but here it is the Angel that delivers the sword to Simon, in exchange for his mark of Cain). This theory is not very sound for me, because in the third episode it is said that the Clave is pursuing a secret project, called “Heavenly Fire” and so it doesn’t match with my fear/theory. I don’t know what to expect, only time will tell.

Last but not least, I would like to say briefly what almost made me feel sick: Maryse and Luke kissing in the third episode. Do I really need to add something about this couple? No, full stop, because I can’t accept Jocelyn’s death, much less these two little doves kissing each other during hard times.

So, this is my opinion about these first three episodes. I am still afraid of the upcoming episodes, but I do hope that one way or another they will end this series in a good way. Or at least, in a “sort of” good way.
If you would like to give me your opinion, leave a comment down here! I would be very glad to hear what you think.
