The Well of Ascension by Brandon Sanderson – Review

Title: The Well of Ascension (Mistborn 2)

Author: Brandon Sanderson

Synopsis (from Goodreads): “It contains spoilers for previous book in the series”
The impossible has been accomplished. The Lord Ruler—the man who claimed to be god incarnate and brutally ruled the world for a thousand years—has been vanquished. But Kelsier, the hero who masterminded that triumph, is dead too, and now the awesome task of building a new world has been left to his young protégé, Vin, the former street urchin who is now the most powerful Mistborn in the land, and to the idealistic young nobleman she loves.
As Kelsier’s protégé and slayer of the Lord Ruler she is now venerated by a budding new religion, a distinction that makes her intensely uncomfortable. Even more worrying, the mists have begun behaving strangely since the Lord Ruler died, and seem to harbor a strange vaporous entity that haunts her.
Stopping assassins may keep Vin’s Mistborn skills sharp, but it’s the least of her problems. Luthadel, the largest city of the former empire, doesn’t run itself, and Vin and the other members of Kelsier’s crew, who lead the revolution, must learn a whole new set of practical and political skills to help. It certainly won’t get easier with three armies – one of them composed of ferocious giants – now vying to conquer the city, and no sign of the Lord Ruler’s hidden cache of atium, the rarest and most powerful allomantic metal.
As the siege of Luthadel tightens, an ancient legend seems to offer a glimmer of hope. But even if it really exists, no one knows where to find the Well of Ascension or what manner of power it bestows.

Can I describe this book with one word? Sure, and I would choose “wow”. And yet I don’t know why I find myself surprised about that, since I have always heard great things about Sanderson. But this novel was the tangible proof that the rumors are definitely true. Let’s see why.
I was a bit afraid that this book wouldn’t meet my taste, since, in my opinion, it’s very difficult to find a sequel worthy of the first installment. Not to mention that in this case the first novel was such an amazing book. But Sanderson outdid himself and created a story that got me hooked to the pages all the time. I couldn’t stop myself from reading, I needed to know more about every single subterfuge and political game that was going on. And I’m so thankful for that.
One of my favourite things about this book in particular was the suspense that Sanderson was able to create. For example, the meeting between Elend and his father, Straff, had my total attention for the entire chapter. Not to mention the ending, I kept gasping all the time both for Elend (my poor boy) and for what Sazed discovered. It was brilliant to create a force that evil and strong that could change the words written on whatever wasn’t made of steel. It created an atmosphere of anxiety and insecurity that I was able to enjoy.
Something I didn’t mention in the previous review of The Final Empire are the fight scenes. Sanderson has a perfect way to create them and he even explains to you why something is happening and other things don’t. It’s so entertaining. Not to mention that for the entirety of the story I was in awe of Vin’s fighting skills. Since the first time she discovered she was a Mistborn, she has become such a strong fighter.
Talking about Vin and Elend, I must say that both of them have a really interesting arc and their characters are for sure well developed. I couldn’t help myself but to root for them all the time, I was hoping they would end up as a couple and when they got married I just weeped. I think that Sanderson could probably improve the romance part a bit, but that’s my only complaint about this book. He was able to create such powerful scenes and speeches with both Vin and Elend’s couple and Sazed and Tindwyl’s couple and yet they still lacked something. Apart from that, I think that this is just a tiny little defect that could be easily forgiven when the reader is presented with one of my favourite parts of this book: when both Elend and Vin told Sazed they weren’t sure about the other’s feelings. It was the cutest thing ever and it made me understand how deeply they loved each other.
Right now, I’m already reading the third novel. After I reached THAT ending, I couldn’t wait any longer and I started The Hero of Ages right away. I can’t wait to talk to you about it!

So, these were my opinions about The Well of Ascension by Brandon Sanderson, hope you enjoyed reading about them! If you would like to let me know your own thoughts or you would like to talk about what I said in this review, leave a comment down below! Thanks for reading.
